Well, I have done my small part, quietly, once again: Ogi Ogas came calling on the alumni network of my grad program for the second time in two years, asking for help with his and Sai Gaddam's second book (A Billion Angry Brains), and I explained to my fellow alums why they should steer clear. Ugh. I am all for giving people a chance, but shoddy research methods + presenting only those results that support your (outdated, stereotyped) thesis + offensive language + requests for free labor = no thank you.

(For background on the fiasco, try here, here and here.)

2.

Oh, original Star Trek. I knew you were kinky, but my aversion to looking at you in a sexual way in the past has blinded me to the breadth of your kinkiness. Latest case in point: Last night my mom and I watched "Wink of an Eye" and "The Empath" because we didn't remember much about them. They turned out to include, respectively, collared, slightly effeminate man-mates, femdom voyeurs and threesome jealousies; and chain-hung, half-torn-shirted McCoy being tortured while his friends and the aliens watched. (More McCoy skin than I remember ever seeing. Ah, I had such a crush on him when I was little.)

Let's just not get into how the empath seemed to represent how women should be acutely empathetic, mute, self-sacrificing, nameless, imprinted upon, and accentuated with a single crystalline tear (TM).

3.

Previously mentioned Inception WIP is on hold because of RL developments that eerily echo the conversation I'd drafted to kick it off. DS9 vid is on hold for technical difficulties. John/Teyla // John/Larrin vid is on hold because… oh wait, because of nothing but my own inability to sit down and work on it. Maybe that will be my goal for what to post for my birthday next week.

4.

Haven't seen Harry Potter 7.2 yet because of vacation. (We marked the occasion by waving to Hogwallow and Dark Hollow Falls at the park, which sounded suitable for Harry's Wizarding England.) Plans are to go Saturday. I am both \o/ and :( about it. It looks good, but afterwards there won't be any more.

Oh, Ogi Ogas. *facepalm* Thanks for doing your bit there, hon.

*hug*

There is not enough *facepalm* in the world. I lost it right around the point where they started to use "shemale" in their poll conversations and ended up not being fake-researcher trolls.

Anyway, last year I had the listserv manager retract the help request (for editing the first book, IIRC) and this time I just laid the situation out there for everyone. We'll see if there's a third....

I was kind of meh about the movie too.. not because it's ending, but because they're just not a big deal to me when I'm not seeing them with people I really like.

But on the plus side, there is bondage in this one.

If it's good, we could go (again?) next month. Last year was Inception... we could make an annual event of summer blockbusters.

Ooh, more bondage? Will it top (heh) Bellatrix torturing Hermione?

sure, if you like. I would watch it again.
Are you seeing it in 3d? I thought they did a good job using it, and seeing the castle/dementors in 3d is a trip.

it's harry/voldemort and pretty, so for me it trumps bellatrix/hermione, but I suspect the reverse will be true for you. I also have a strong aversion to bellatrix, so that didn't help.

Hmm, that'll be a toughie - Voldemort holding Harry against the gravestone in Goblet of Fire and pressing against his scar until they both moaned was pretty damn hot too. I guess we will see! Thanks for the tip, now I can look forward to it.

Seriously? A Billion Angry Brains is the actual title of this thing?

Why do I get the feeling he's going to once again attempt to strip-mine fandom for profit?

What's he planning to do, write up his foregone conclusions regarding why fandom-at-large now despises him, and claim that the anger is precisely the same "hard-wired" judgmental response we have to people who eat foods we find disgusting?

I mean, obviously such a conclusion would be ridiculous, but then, so was his last one.

Ha.

Here is what I love about the book description and call for assistance. The summary says it will "[combine] original online behavioral data with neuroscience, animal studies, and anthropology to offer a surprising new vision of human aggression"... and then it says they need help with "a variety of research." Which suggests that once again, they are assuming an outcome before they've collected data. Hurrah.

Hard to think of someone having a crush on McCoy :), but there was quite a bit of kinkiness in Star Trek TOS (although never enough Spock-torture for my taste).

I'm mercifully out of the HP movies, but my spouse and children tell me the last one was good. Plus, ate least JKR is alive - so you can always hope she adds to canon.

True, true.

N'aww, I had a huge huge crush on McCoy. Like, before I registered the appeal of Kirk and Spock. I wanted to be an orphan Star Trek kid or Romulan prisoner or whatever so he could rescue me and we could hang out in Sickbay.

*headdesk* I can't even. Thank you for trying to head them off. If only Leela could take care of Ogas and Gaddam.

when I used to write Trek fanfic ages ago one of the OCs I came up with was a MALE member of that mute empathic race. I thought it was od we never saw anybody of that race in Trek again considering how the epie was about her race being saved from destruction.

Sounds interesting! Yeah, someone could (maybe did?) write all kinds of good stories where all the one-episode characters congregate and complain about their lack of follow-up ... all the romantic partners and rescued whoevers who said they'd be back or were promised a visit, and then disappeared.

Haha, sounds like the soul-sucking job I left behind on the West Coast. Now I work with good research methods and updated ideas... but the same requests for free labour :-)
